Online Writing Labs (OWLs)

Below are links to a few OWLs that service students and faculty from colleges and universities worldwide. After reading the brief descriptions of the OWLs' mission and services, visit their home pages for instructions on contacting and receiving help with writing projects.

Eventually, we hope to provide an extensive list of OWLs from various colleges and universities. To provide accurate information about available OWL services, we are inviting OWL directors to add their institution's online writing centre to our list by e-mailing a brief description of the OWL's mission and services to us.

Bemidji State University Writing Resource Center
BSU's online writing resource centre offers e-mail consultations. E-mail a draft of your paper for assistance, or browse through online writing resources, including tips on finding a subject for your essay.

Dakota State University OWL
Funded by the Bush Grant, the DSU OWL emphasizes writing in all academic areas. DSU's OWL, a writing centre that is available only online, is staffed by writing consultants from various academic disciplines who offer writing assistance through e-mail.

Purdue's Online Writing Lab
The flagship OWL that set the standards for online writing centres, Purdue's OWL provides writing assistance through e-mail. Send a draft of your paper or a question about grammar, punctuation, or English usage, and a writing consultant will respond within 24 hours. In addition, the Purdue OWL provides links to writing resources and Internet search engines, handouts, and teacher resources.

Texas Woman's University OWL
Along with TWU students at campuses throughout Texas and at TWU's sister school Mukogawa University, in Japan, Texas Woman's University's OWL provides writing assistance to students throughout the United States and worldwide. E-mail a draft of an essay or writing question to the Texas Woman's University OWL, and a writing consultant will respond within 24 hours.

University of Michigan OWL
The University of Michigan's OWL provides writing consultation through e-mail from Sunday to Thursday; writing consultants are online between 7:00pm and 11:00pm. E-mail a draft of an essay or writing question to the University of Michigan OWL, and a writing tutor will respond within 48 hours. Note that papers received after 7:00pm on Thursday evening will be responded to on Sunday evening.

University of Minnesota --Twin Cities's Department of Rhetoric's Online Writing Center
The department of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus currently offers online tutoring to students and writers worldwide. Tutors at the Rhetoric department's OWL are not editors but, instead, are interested in "teaching you something about the writing process and helping you become a better writer." When students e-mail a draft of their document to the OWL, an OWL tutor will respond within 24 hours.

University of Missouri's Online Writery
Writing consultations are available through personal e-mail or "real time" sessions in ZooMOO. Links to writing resources and information about the Online Writery's mission and the specialties and interests of writing consultants are also available on the Online Writery's World Wide Web site.

University of South Carolina -- Aiken's Writing Room
For online consultation, students can send their questions and papers to the USCA Writing Room's mail list, and one (if not several) of the online consultants will respond. Online consultants will try to respond within 24 hours of receiving the request. While you're in the Writing Room, check out the writing resources.
