Convention governs which abbreviations are acceptable in essay writing.

Abbreviate the following: 

  1. certain common forms of address and titles used with proper names: 
  2. Rosie Sanchez, Ph.D.
    Dr. Bask, M.D.
    Doug Sims, Jr.
    St. Theresa
    Fran Robbins, M.A.
    Mr. Francesco 

  3. technical terms, especially in technical writing: 
  4. BTU (British Thermal Unit)
    cc (cubic centimetre)
    mph (miles per hour)
    km (kilometre) 

  5. expressions of time: 
  6. 1456 B.C.
    8 A.M.
    A.D. 245
    MST (Mountain Standard Time) 

  7. only certain words in names of places, such as Mt., St., and D.C.: 
  8. Mt. Shasta
    St. Louis
    Washington, D.C.

Write out the following expressions:

  • most military, religious, academic, and government titles: 
  • Professor Dennis Turner (not Prof.)
    Senator Jenny Jenkins (not Sen.) 

  • given names: 
  • George (not Geo.)
    William (not Wm.) 

  • the days of the week, months, and holidays: 
  • Tuesday (not Tues.)

  • the names of places, streets, states, cities, countries, and geographical regions:
