Introduction

Capitalize the following: 

  1. The first word in a sentence [Harbrace 23e]: 
  2. The tulips bloom in the spring. 

    The first word in a direct quotation [Harbrace 23e]: 

    "Stop writing now. The exam is over," said Mr. Philby. 

  3. The pronoun I and the interjection O [Harbrace 23d]: 
  4. "Grant me peace, O Lord," I said. 

  5. Proper nouns, proper adjectives, and official titles that precede names [Harbrace 23a]: 
  6. The speaker will be Senator Kathy Rose, a graduate of Tulane University.

  7. Days of the week, months, and holidays [Harbrace 23a(5)]: 
  8. Friday, March, Easter 

  9. The first letters of all words, except articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and the to in infinitives, in the titles of books, magazines, plays, movies, television shows, short stories, poems, and other works. The first and last word of a title is capitalized regardless of part of speech. [Harbrace 23c]
